Recognizing The Signs

At Jaclyn Hoffman, Ed.D. & Associates, we have designed the following checklist to alert you to common child behaviors. If your child displays one or more of the following signs you should consider specialized educational assistance.

Intellectual Signs

  • Lag in early verbal/motor skills
  • Inability to communicate thoughts clearly
  • Below average reading/math/writing skills
  • Short attention span, distractibility
  • Impulsivity
  • Hyperactivity
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Lack of organization with school assignments
  • Difficulty completing school tasks
  • Need for constant help with homework

Social/Emotional Signals

  • Boredom/lack of motivation for learning
  • Emotional immaturity
  • Difficulty adapting to school setting
  • Acting out in classroom/home
  • Frequent punishment at school/home
  • Anxiety about school performance
  • Difficulty in assuming responsibility for tasks
  • Difficulty in developing friendships
  • Excessive complaints about teacher, curriculum, peers
